Global HAI Burden

Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) are a serious and growing problem across the world. 7% of patients in high income and 15% in low-middle income countries will acquire at least one HAI in acute care hospitals. 1 in every 10 infected patients dies of HAI.

Antimicrobial Resistance

HAIs are increasingly being caused by resistant organisms. In 2019, 4.9 million deaths worldwide were associated with AMR, which highlights the need for disinfectants that will not contribute to resistance but rather work with antibiotics to stop the growing problem of microbial resistance.

Surface Disinfection Need

Disinfection of surfaces plays a critical role in reducing the risk of HAIs. All currently available high-level disinfectants (HLDs) or sterilants have been available for decades. As microbial resistance increases, the need for new biocides can no longer be ignored.

Sepsis Mortality Risk

Approx 20% of all-cause global deaths are due to sepsis, a condition potentially avoidable with effective infection control. More than half of all sepsis-associated deaths are a result of HAIs.

DALY Impact

WHO estimates that 75% of DALY (Disability-Adjusted Life years; 10 years of life lost due to death, disability, or ill-health) is due to antibiotic-resistant E. Aureus as a result of HAIs.

WHO & IPC Warning

One of the key messages of WHO’s session on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) held on 7/3/22 at the World Health Assembly is that AMR and resistance to sterilants are responsible for most HAIs.

Pandemic Preparedness

The session emphasized that it was essential to tackle the spread of these pathogens to avoid devastating outcomes and strengthen the preparedness of health systems to avoid pandemics and prevent AMR.

Chlorine Compounds

Toxic fumes that cause significant harm along the respiratory tract.
Highly corrosive.
Unknown negative environmental impact due to possible by-products.

Phenols

Leave a sticky residue that takes several days to evaporate.
Cause phenolytic toxidrome, which can cause renal and cardiac toxicity.
Toxic to the aquatic environment and toxic to most organisms.

Alcohols

Not sporicidal at proper effective concentrations.
Highly flammable.
No domestic purpose.
Evaporate rapidly, compliance difficult.

Peracetic Acid

Corrosive
Rapid and sporicidal action.
Irritant to mucous membranes.
Slight odor.
Higher cost.

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds

Not recommended against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and other Gram-negative pathogens.
Lack sporicidal activity
Skin and eye irritant.
May corrode equipment and form irritating, hard-to-degrade substances.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Decomposes in air or water into oxygen and water.
Disinfectant in concentrations less than 10%.
Less effective against viruses.
Unstable
Toxic fumes that cause significant harm along the respiratory tract.
Highly corrosive.
Unknown negative environmental impact due to possible by-products.
